el último fin de semana

The last weekend. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again because I just can’t believe how quickly the last three months have gone by. Before I left, I was nervous that 3 months was going to feel like eternity and instead, it felt like the blink of an eye. This experience has been truly unforgettable!!! I’ll be sharing some more information about my travels, as well as recommendations, in my future posts! I’ll be keeping the blog to document whatever sorts of travels I find myself on going forward 🙂

On Saturday, June 1st, I went with Juanjo and Rosa to the Real Monasterio de Santa Clara in Tordesillas. I couldn’t believe how breathtaking the monastery was!! Unfortunately, I wasn’t allowed to take pictures in most parts, but I have some from the beautiful Islamic-style patio and I’m including some from Google because it’s too amazing to leave out. Most of the monastery serves as a museum now, but part of it is still used for eight nuns that live within the convent. The monastery is a mix of many different architectural styles – from Islamic, Gothic, and Catholic – which creates a striking difference within the buildings themselves. In one room, you admire the incredibly detailed Islamic architecture and the next, you’re looking at a carefully sculpted statue of Jesus. I really loved how the unique styles blended together within the church to create the masterpiece of the ceiling.

The bottom two are from Google 🙂

After our tour, we went to Juanjo’s parents house for my last lunch with them. It was delicious and a lot of food as usual! I took a little siesta after lunch to prepare for the barbecue that my friends had planned for the night. Andrea and Jacob have a grill and a patio at the house that they rent, so they hosted “la barbacoa” or the barbecue! It was super hot outside so we cooled down with tinto de verano. Toni, Claudia’s chef boyfriend, grilled all the food! We had salad, pancetta (bacon), chicken, morcilla (blood sausage), pork, and zucchini. It was so yummy and filling!!! After eating everything we could, I taught everyone how to play Kings and Andrea & Teresa said little speeches about how they were going to miss me (some tears were definitely shed). I can’t believe how lucky I was to have such an amazing group of friends. We headed out to the bars one last time and even though they were empty, we had a great time!

I didn’t get home until the typical 4 am, so Sunday morning I spent sleeping! After recovering a bit, we went to Rosa’s parents house for lunch and a long sobremesa (5 hours!). Her cousins came by and it was fun to hang out for the last time. I was totally exhausted, but I unfortunately had to start packing 😦 The rest of Sunday was spent organizing and folding clothes!

On the right are Rosa’s mom’s flowers. The whole terrace is covered!

My next post will be about my last week in Spain! I know I’m behind – bear with me!! 🙂
