The past few days have been great! I haven’t had enough to write full posts about because I’m settling into a routine now! School has been a lot of fun – I’ve given the presentation about myself 10 times now and I’m thankful that that’s over with. I can’t go two steps in school without someone yelling “Hello Alyssa!” They pronounce my name like “ah-LEE-sah” (if that makes sense) and I’ve come to introducing myself that way too for simplicity’s sake. I see students around Tordesillas and in class on Tuesday, one of my students told me she saw me at the grocery store in my PJs!! Not true because I haven’t left the house in PJs!
On Tuesday, I had my first private lesson with two siblings that live nearby. They’re 7 and 5 and are so cute! On Wednesday, I met up with Teresa, Claudia, their cousin Andrea, and Fran for some beers at a nearby bar. We spoke in English and they asked me about life in NYC and my job. They were shocked when I told them how much we work in busy season. They said they complain when they have to work a full 40 hours a week! We also met up for coffee on Thursday and hung out while they took a break from studying. The group decided we’re having a party on Saturday and that they’re throwing me a birthday party in May! I even made it into their group chat! I’m so lucky to have met them – they’re all so kind and hysterical.
Thursday I had another private lesson with a boy who’s in my 3rd grade Spanish class! Starting next week, I also have lessons with his mom, who’s the physical therapist at the school. Seems like everyone wants to learn how to speak English!
Speaking of Spanish class though, boy what a time it’s been. I totally did a section of the homework wrong and didn’t realize until after I said all of my responses out loud to the class!! I’m pretty positive my teacher didn’t notice, but I’m sure the kids are all thinking I’m an idiot!!! Class is fun, but a bit hard to follow along because my teacher speaks so fast. It’s definitely helping though!
In other news, I’m pretty sure I’m going to Salamanca next weekend with Ana María and her family. Tonisha and I are planning some trips together – one to Sevilla with Amanda from our program, and one to Munich for Springfest, which is the baby sister festival of Oktoberfest. I’m hoping to get to Portugal and maybe Morocco with an old friend from TCNJ. We’ll see! My family is taking me to see León and Segovia too.
Every day that I’ve been here, I can’t believe how lucky I am and how I’m so thankful for this experience. Pa and God are definitely smiling down on me!! 🙂
